How much power does a data center use?

Depending on the size and purpose of the facility, the answer can range from a few megawatts to hundreds of megawatts for a major hyperscale or AI data center campus.

That enormous range is why statements such as “this data center requires 100 MW” need context.

A megawatt measures power at a point in time. Electricity consumed over a longer period is typically measured in megawatt-hours, gigawatt-hours or terawatt-hours.

Understanding the difference makes it much easier to interpret data center announcements and utility filings.

100,000 kilowatts of power.

If a data center actually consumed exactly 100 MW continuously for an entire year:

100 MW × 8,760 hours = 876,000 MWh

That equals:

876 million kWh per year.

Actual consumption could be lower.

The facility might not operate at its maximum designed or contracted electrical load every hour.

Megawatt-Hour — MWh

A megawatt-hour measures energy consumed over time.

A facility drawing 1 MW continuously for one hour consumes 1 MWh.

Therefore, when a developer describes a proposed facility as a “500 MW campus,” that typically describes electrical capacity or demand—not annual electricity consumption.

How Much Electricity Do U.S. Data Centers Use?

Data centers are becoming a significant component of national electricity demand.

Berkeley Lab’s June 2026 United States Data Center Energy Usage Report: 2025 Update estimates 649 TWh of U.S. data center electricity consumption in 2030 in its reference case, equivalent to approximately 11.8% of total U.S. electricity use.

The scale of expected growth is also affecting transmission planning. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2026 National Transmission Needs Study specifically identifies load growth from data centers among the pressures creating additional transmission needs.

The servers themselves are the primary reason.

But data center electricity usage includes much more than servers.

A facility may power:

AI changes the equation because modern AI workloads can require massive clusters of high-performance accelerators.

These systems can operate at very high power density.

More computing electricity also produces more heat.

That means higher-density AI infrastructure may require additional:

500 MW × 8,760 hours = 4,380,000 MWh

That’s:

4.38 TWh per year.

Again, that is a theoretical constant-load calculation rather than a prediction for a particular facility.

But it demonstrates why a single large campus can matter to a utility.

How Much Power Would a 1 GW Data Center Use?

One gigawatt equals:

1,000 MW.

At a constant theoretical 1 GW load:

1,000 MW × 8,760 hours = 8.76 TWh per year.

Large campuses are generally built in stages, so a planned 1 GW campus would not necessarily consume that much electricity immediately.

Utilities instead evaluate the project’s expected load ramp:

  • Initial phase
  • Subsequent buildings
  • Future expansion
  • Full build-out

That phasing determines when substations, transformers and potentially new data center transmission lines may be required.

Why Data Center Power Consumption Matters Locally

National percentages can hide regional concentration.

Data centers cluster around specific locations with:

  • Fiber connectivity
  • Available land
  • Utility capacity

  • Existing technology ecosystems

That means local effects can be substantially larger than national averages suggest.
